Flying Pie 12/22/09

Flying Pie Pizzeria
SE 79th and Stark St. Portland, Oregon
December 22nd 2009

General Information: Flying Pie is a locally owned joined with a great reputation from people without shitty taste in pizza. It's the kind of place you always go back to if you aren't a piece of shit elitist.

The Story: Family was over, we wanted pizza before looking at Christmas lights, we went to Flying Pie. I've been here a hundred times I'd say. Usually always reliable.

When we got the pizza's they had these stands you put them on. These little fuckers ruined our experience. We put one of the pizza's on it. After only 2 slices the fucking pizza fell off the stand and slid off onto the table. Of course Flying Pie didn't replace the pizza. It was their fucking pizza stands that caused this horse shit. That's right, fuck you flying pie people.

-The Pizza-

1 Large Pepperoni
1 Large Miss Piggy w/ 1/4 cheese only on Gluten Free Crust

Crust-

The crust on the Pepperoni was ok. I'd rate it about a 5. However, it should have been about an 8 or a 9. It was as dry as the pussy of a 90 year old prostitute. It lacked the buttery goodness (whatever the fuck it is) that it usually gives. I was extremely disappointed.

The Miss Piggy, well, I didn't get to try it.

Sauce-

Flying Pie has a great flavorful sauce. They don't fuck around. It has no bite to it, but it sure tastes fantastic. Even though I was unable to order my usual extra sauce, the pizza still had plenty of it, much to the chagrin of my dad.

Toppings-

Typically Flying Pie piles the toppings on like a motherfucker. Not this time. I was extremely disappointed. In fact the last few times I've been the toppings seem to have decreased. It had less pepperoni than your average Papa Murphy's Pizza.

Cheese-

Flying Pie always has a good mozzarella cheese and they put a lot on, but not too much. No exception here. The cheese was a winner.

Overall taste-

Here's the thing about this trip. It was shitty and disappointing, especially for Flying Pie. The pizza was about half as good as usual. They left about 1.5 inches or crust exposed or more. That is just unacceptable in so many ways. I'm going to return to Flying Pie again because I know they are capable of a winning pie, but this was sub par.

Value-

Surprisingly enough, Flying Pie's pizza's are reasonably price. For 2 pizza, one large and one medium and 5 soda's it came to only $35.00 which was fantastic. Considering the actual experience, food alone, I'd have only paid half, but the company was fantastic and the atmosphere was as well.

-Beer-

On tap-

A small but quality selection of local beers, with some regional brews as well as your typical array of domestics. I wasn't too concerned about the beer this time.

Bottled-

I wasn't paying attention to the bottled beer at all.

-Atmosphere-

Location-

Located relatively close to the freeway and it's easy to find if you are familiar with Portland. It isn't downtown so parking is free, but it's on the street.

Exterior Atmosphere-

Very cool looking place. Old, right on the street. Looks like a pizza joint should.

Interior Atmosphere-

AWESOME. Legendary really. Decorated with OLD sports memorabilia including old NASL pennants, including the Portland Timbers, which is always a win. There are whole tables, chairs and place settings mounted to the ceiling. It doesn't get much better than this for a dine-in pizza experience.

Service-

Garbage. It took forever to order our food as the person at the front counter was too busy bullshitting to pay us any attention. The people making the pizza were talking shit about customer that had just left. Tacky and unprofessional. Aside from that, and the not replacing our pizza (which would have been nice), we didn't have much contact with them.

-Review Notes-

A disappointing experience at a pizza restaurant I recommend heartily to all. Frank and I will go together soon and see if it lives up to our usual expectation.

-OVERALL RATING-

5/10 this time.
